We all know what it’s like to travel with children who are bored, whether they’re our own or not. If you want to avoid the constant whines of ‘Are we there yet?’ on your next coach journey with the kids, why not try some of these classic travel games? The best part is that they don’t need any equipment, so can be played anywhere at any time.
This is the classic travel game, and can be played with children of any age. The first player says, ‘I spy with my little eye something beginning with __’ and then gives the letter that the thing they have spotted begins with. If you’re playing with very young children, steer clear of anything too abstract or complicated to avoid frustrations, and remember not to guess their answers too quickly, even if it’s very obvious!
I Went To The Shops
This is another game we may all have played at some time or another. The first person starts off by saying ‘I went to the shops and I bought a ___’, filling in the blank with an item. This game then tests everyone’s memory when each person adds a new item to the list whilst also having to remember all the previous items. For example, player 1 might say ‘I went to the shops and I bought an apple’, player 2 might say ‘I went to the shops and I bought an apple and a banana’ and so on until it gets too tricky to remember.
This might not be every child’s idea of fun, but for those who like to test themselves you can always give your children a spelling test. This way they can learn and it’ll also stop them from being bored. Make sure you combine words they’ll know with ones that might be a little more challenging to keep them interested, and tie them in with their favourite hobbies or books they’re reading.
The Yellow Car Game
For some reason, it is always yellow vehicles that seem to be involved in these colour-spotting games, but you can choose any colour you like. The first person to spot a yellow car wins! If you want to draw the game out for longer, get the kids to make a tally. The great thing about this is that they’ll be so busy concentrating they should be quiet and distracted for at least a little while, giving you some much-needed peace!
