Step back 50 years into the past to visit Blackpool for The Grand Theatre’s 2015 production of Hairspray the Musical. Presented by Blackpool and Fylde Light Opera Company, this nationally acclaimed musical follows the story of Tracey, a big little girl with a huge heart and a dance in her step, trying to follow her teenage dreams to become a dance performer on the local Tv Show ‘The Corny Collins Show’.
While at first the premise of the musical seems pretty simple, the show covers a lot of serious themes. Racism and equality is tackled, preconceptions of beauty, weight and even religion is tapped into at times. It is refreshing to see a protagonist who is happy with herself as she is, even if she is a little on the big side and it really reflects as we join her throughout the show.
Whether you’re a fan of musicals, you’re looking for a show to see as a first time show, or you’re looking for a good safe show to take the kids, Hairspray ticks all the boxes. Tickets are available from The Grand Theatre website and the show week is on from Tuesday 19th May to Saturday 23rd May 2015. Why not hire a minibus and go with your local theatre group?
